Knitting

In this age devoted to technology, it is somehow reassuring to quietly sit with knitting yarn and needles to create something with our own hands. Historians don't agree as to where and when someone first picked up two pieces of wood and found a way to turn a string of wool into a pair of socks, but no doubt that, as all things, it derived from necessity, the need to keep warm in winter.

Some decades ago, as the ready-to-wear industry filled stores with gorgeous sweaters and spectacular ponchos, knitting gradually fell out of grace. No longer a need, but not yet a hobby, it was considered old fashion to the point that those who still knit, didn't dare admit they did.

Those shadowy years didn't last, fortunately. In the early eighties knitting stores flourished once more. The art of knitting attracted new adepts and recently, the Web gave it a whole new life.

No need to go out anymore to find the lovely poncho knitting pattern we're looking for, or to buy the knitting supplies required to start our craft. Scores of websites offer free knitting patterns for babies , for teens, or for grown ups... even vintage knitting patterns to help us create that one of a kind Afghan that will add a unique touch to our living room.

Knitting is now more popular than ever, perhaps because it is no longer an obligation but rather a true pleasure... and one of the best anti-stress hobby there is.
